ULF JOHANSSON WERRE – pianist, trombonist, composer, bandleader, artistic leader for Uppsala University Jazz Orchestra, Honorary Doctor of medicine
Ulf is considered as world-class on both piano and trombone. He can play many different styles with a distinguished personality, technique and swing. On piano he is for example compared with Teddy Wilson, Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson and on trombone with Jack Teagarden and J.J. Johnson. He is also a very popular vocalist with breathtaking scat singing.
He was one of four musicians initially accepted to the first program for jazzmusicians at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm where he met Jan Adefelt and a life-long friendship started.
Ulf has been honored with several awards, obtained the Sweden-America Foundation music scholarship 1978-81 and has been a member of the Swedish Radio Group, Arne Domnérus Orchestra, Swedish Swing Society with Lars Erstrand, Ove Lind, Antti Sarpila and Gugge Hedrenius Big Blues Band. Ulf is since mid 1980ies bandleader of orchestras ranging from trio to big band and is regularly engaged as solo artist. He has played with among others Mel Lewis, Warren Vaché, Clark Terry, Harry Allen, Phil Wilson, Butch Miles, Bob Wilber, Jerome Richardson, Klas Lindquist, Hans Backenroth, Andreas Pettersson, Gunhild Carling and was at Newport Jazz Festival appreciated by Harry “Sweets” Edison and Buddy Tate.
JAN ADEFELT - doublebass
Jan is one of Sweden’s most experienced bassists and has played in ensembles featuring early jazz, swing, bebop, fusion and modern improvisational jazz. He is equally at home in large and small jazz ensembles, on stage or in the recording studio, working with folk musicians and choirs. Jan studied at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. He continued his studies in Boston, Massachusetts at the Berklee College of Music in 1985 where he was a Performance Major.
He has worked as a freelance musician since 1982 and has been sideman and toured with some of Sweden’s leading artists, jazz musicians and jazz ensembles including- Alice Babs, Monica Zetterlund, Putte Wickman, Roffe Ericsson, Egil Johansen, Charlie Norman, Nils Lindberg, Ulf Johansson Werre, Anders Widmark, Andreas Pettersson, Åsa Jinder, Fredrik Noren Band, Göran Strandberg trio, Gugge Hedrenius Big Blues band, Stockholm Jazz Orchestra and Johnny Olsson Storband.
Through the years Jan has performed with many foreign guest soloists – Clark Terry, Bob Brookmeyer, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Barney Kessel, Moose Alison, Toots Tielemans, Georgie Fame, Terry Gibbs, Wild Bill Davidson, Carrie Smith, Scott Hamilton and Warren Vache.
Since 1994 he has been the primary bass instructor at the Jazz Institute at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.
OSCAR JOHANSSON WERRE – drummer
Ulf’s son Oscar is recently graduated from Stockholm Royal College of Music in jazz drumming and is already in charge of different musical styles where he excels in swing, technique and taste. On Swedish Youth Jazz Festival he was elected “Most Valuable Player”. Besides being member of Father Ulfs different orchestras he plays with orchestras representing a broad stylistic range.
MATILDA JOHANSSON WERRE – vocalist
The third Werre – daughter Matilda – is at the age of 21 showing a stunning maturity in jazz singing with a crystal clear voice and perfect time, inspired by legends as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Dianne Reeves. She also plays piano and moves between jazz, musical and pop music and is a member of Uppsala University Jazz Orchestra.
